Wairarapa Moana Kaitiaki Programme

In Takitimu this term, we will be involved in the Wairarapa Moana Whitebait connection programme.  We have been visited by Zoe and Clare once already, and will have another visit on the 18th February from 9:30 - 11am.  During this session we will be preparing for our upcoming field trips.  All parents are welcome to attend this session, and are invited to attend the field trips (we need at least three other adults to meet our ratio).  The details about where and when are below.  A permission slip will be going home this week.

Field Trip 1:
Tuesday 1st March
9:30-1pm
Waiorongomai River Picnic Area

Field Trip 2:
Tuesday 15th March
12-2:45pm
Lake Domain

Through this Inquiry study, we will be looking at:
- Historical and Cultural context
- Biodiversity Uses/Human Impacts
- Catchments
- Freshwater/Wetlands/Ecosystem
- Whitebait/Eels/freshwater species – lifecycles.
- Techniques (prep for field trip).
- Freshwater Monitoring
- Macro-invertebrate surveys.

The students will follow this learning with an action day where we will work to rejuvenate one of the local streams.

The students in Takitimu were very excited after Zoe and Clare visited, and were able to draw on, and share, their prior knowledge of our native aquatic life.

    1. It sure is! Thanks Karla. The students are certainly all very engaged in learning about our native aquatic life, and the impact humans are having on their survival. We are looking forward to exploring the streams on our upcoming field trips.
